Brodnax gives an account of his life, focusing on his participation in the Civil War. Joined Georgia 2nd Regiment and protected railroads through the Battle of Chickamauga; witnessed the death of General Polk from a front-line trench; participated in the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Later joined Wheeler's 2nd Georgia Cavalry, raided into Tennessee and followed Sherman to Savannah and north. Wounded and sent home again. Opened a mercantile business and flourished, married, and also got into banking and the Georgia state legislature. Ends with a brief ancestry of the Brodnax family.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829.
